In 1439, Archbishop Euthymius ordered the construction of a new belfry, and the new bells glorified the proud Novgorod.

This small church in the southern part of the Novgorod Kremlin tells many stories. Until the late 17th century, the site held the majestic Cathedral of the Holy Great Martyrs Boris and Gleb, which rivalled St Sophia’s in size.

This church was erected in the 12th century by the son of Vladimir Monomakh, Prince Mstislav, on the opposite bank of the Volkhov from St Sophia’s Cathedral. Starting from the 13th century, it became the main church for the Novgorod veche, the highest legislature and judicial authority in the Republic of Novgorod, which gathered in front of one of the entrances.

The church was erected in the 16th century by the Moscow merchant Ivan Syrkov.
