Description
This small church in the southern part of the Novgorod Kremlin tells many stories. Until the late 17th century, the site held the majestic Cathedral of the Holy Great Martyrs Boris and Gleb, which rivalled St Sophia’s in size.
According to legend, it was built by a wealthy merchant, Sotko Sytinich, who inspired the epic adventurer Sadko. Over time, the church fell into disrepair and was eventually dismantled; a new church was built around the chapel dedicated to the martyr Andrew Stratelates. It still holds 16th century frescoes with fragments of a grandiose image of the Ascension of Christ.
