Description
The world’s only surviving mural by the Byzantine artist Theophanes the Greek attracts art historians as well as visitors. The theologian Epiphanius the Wise described the artist’s unique style as “an unknown and extraordinary painting.” The image of the Saviour bears unparalleled internal dynamics, psychological tension, an amazing sharpness and power. The church’s 14th century architecture is striking with its rich décor reminiscent of the Novgorod Republic heyday. Its windows, niches and embossed crosses form a unique pattern that invariably catches the eye.
