Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God at the Monastery of St Anthony

One of the oldest churches in Russia, it was built at the beginning of the 12th century by St Anthony of Rome According to legend, the saint sailed to the bank of the Volkhov River on a stone, and founded a monastery there. This stone can now be seen at the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God. Several fragments of ancient frescoes with unique content can still be seen on the walls – non-canonical and presumably designed by St Anthony himself. Most of the walls are covered with bright ornamental images created in the 19th century.
