About object

The Church of Sts Florus and Laurus is a Russian Orthodox church in Veliky Porog, Borovichsky District.

The church was built in the 17th century by a river and dedicated to the martyrdom of holy brothers Florus and Laurus who perished in the 2nd century. Known for their unshakable faith, the two brothers are considered to be the patron saints of horses in the Novgorodian Land.

The Church in Veliky Porog is a noteworthy example of 18th century Russian architecture. The rapid and tumultuous Msta River flowing below the church elevates its beauty and elegance. The churchyard and cemetery complement the architectural composition of the site. The chapels and the cathedral in Opechensky Ryadok are affiliated with the Church of Sts Florus and Laurus.
