This church was commissioned by Novgorod boyars in the 14th century. A classic example of the period’s architecture, it is one of the most outstanding pieces of architectural heritage from medieval Novgorod. There are similarities with the nearby Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour on Ilyina Street, including the rich decor on the facades, the compositions and individual figures of the frescoes. The artist seems clearly influenced by Byzantine art of the 13th-14th centuries; some details replicate the painting style of the famous Theophanes the Greek. Medieval graffiti can still be seen on the walls, including the humorous “No noise, walk quietly,” the plaintive “Sava followed me from the marketplace, he beat me up, I wrote” or even the mysterious “I’ll go like a beaver near the river.”
