The chapel was built in 1826 as a tribute to Alexander I, whose body was kept at St Catherine’s Church for one night during the funeral procession from Taganrog to the capital. The chapel was consecrated as the Chapel of St Jacob of Borovichi, after the saint who lived in the 16th century. The church was renovated in 2009.
It is a cultural heritage site of regional importance.
