The most magical night of the year – 2021 Museum Night – promises to be packed with events! Novgorod Region residents and guests will be able to enjoy a ton of events starting this very weekend – excursions, exhibitions, workshops, scavenger hunts and many others. Read this programme, keep it and share with your friends!

VELIKY NOVGOROD

The Novgorod Kremlin will become a centre of outdoor technologies for 2021 Museum Night. On 15 May 2021, visitors to the Kremlin between 8 pm and midnight will see the familiar monuments, exhibits and museum stories in a new light.
A night photography workshop will teach them how to catch natural light for taking artistic and inimitable pictures. Landmarks will be seen from new perspectives from the window of an electric vehicle. Children will discover Medieval Novgorod through multimedia technology.
Meetings with restorers will show how different sciences help preserve priceless works of art for centuries while theatrical excursions and scavenger hunts will revisit exciting moments in the history of Russia. Shadow of Alexander Nevsky, Ivan the Terrible, Russian aristocrats and educators can be seen at the eight venues of the event.

KRESTSY

Guests of the Krestetsky District are invited to an exciting programme for International Museum Day from 10 am to 9 pm on 14 May.
Every visitor to the Krestsy Museum of Local History and Lore will find something to their liking. There is the Hot Stories interactive programme and activities with flat irons, including an unusual encaustic workshop on drawing pictures with a hot iron. There is also a scavenger hunt related to achievements in science and technology, performances of unusual music pieces played on different folk instruments and painting workshops.

VALDAI

The Museum Bell Centre and the Museum of Bells invite everyone to a bell-themed Museum Night in Valdai from 7 pm to 10 pm on 15 May. The staff of the Valdai museums will explain the intricate techniques involved in making church and coachmen’s bells in different regions of Russia, arrange a team battle of bell moulders from Valdai, Purekh, Kasimov and Slobodskoy, tell bell tales and teach novices how to design their own, play an evening peal and explain the difference from the morning or evening peals, lead tours of Valdai’s bell history, and much more. The programme will kick off at the Museum Bell Centre in the city streets with photo opportunities near the Tsar Horseshoe and will proceed to the Museum of Bells and large bell display.

Museum Night at Staraya Russia Museum of Local History and Lore
The museum invites city residents and guests to an evening of memories from 7 pm to 10 pm on 15 May. The theme is “I live with this city.” The comfortable hall located in the buildings of the former Transfiguration Monastery is hosting a related exhibition. The organisers recommend taking along cases with stories and memoirs, albums with photographs and note pads for the “research symposium.” There is also a chest of puzzles and the museum’s antiquities storeroom.

Museum Night at Dostoyevsky museums in Staraya Russa

The region’s residents and guests are invited to learn about the life and works of the great writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky from 6 pm to 10 pm on 15 May. New creative projects, excursion and interactive programmes have been prepared for city guests who will be the first to see the “Footprints in the Drawings of Words and Places” exhibition tells the story of how graduates of Novgorod children’s arts school visited Staraya Russa, got interested in Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s ideas and made a series of works dedicated to the writer. “Visiting with Fyodor Dostoyevsky” scavenger hunt offers an interactive way to engage with the Brothers Karamazov Museum which presents Dostoyevsky’s world through the lens of the great novel. An anniversary evening marking the 40th anniversary of the Fyodor Dostoyevsky House-Museum recreates the atmosphere of the last century when a commemorative exhibition was being organised at the writer’s house in Staraya Russa. SOLTSY

Museum Night at Soltsy Museum of Local History and Lore
The Soltsy Museum of Local History and Lore will hold an annual Museum Night as part of International Museum Day celebrations from 8 pm to 9 pm on 15 May. The mantelpiece room will be the venue for opening two exhibitions – an exhibition of paintings by Oleg Saulov, member of the Russian Union of Artists, corresponding member of the Petrovskaya Academy of Sciences and Arts, a custodian of exhibitions at the Novgorod Centre of Modern Art, and The Living Tree, an exhibition of crafts by Soltsy artist and craftsman Bulat Akhmetov. The hall of local history will hold a screening of a film produced by the museum’s staff and based on the recollections of war children and documents from the museum’s collection “Soltsy. July 1941” dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Soltsy counter-offensive. Welcome!

BOROVICHI

Museum Night at the Museum of Borovichi Town and Borovichi Land
Every hour from 6 pm to 10 pm on 15 May new encounters will be happening at the museum. The family programme A Very Smart Museum will take you on a virtual journey to deep antiquity, open up the streets of the ancient city and unlock a magic chest with fairy tales and puzzles. Lyadov’s Magic World literary and music programme is dedicated to the years the famous composer lived in Borovichi whereas music from different eras will be heard at the meeting “Both life, and tears and love” highlighting the bravery of city residents during the Great Patriotic War with military newsreels, war time poetry and a model of “real hospital-city.” The meeting with Valery Artemyev, creator of the Memorial to the Defenders of Russia’s Sea Borders, will tell you about famous Borovichi-born admirals, expedition crews and war heroes. After dusk, the excursion The City and Its Residents will tour the following sites: Government Agencies, Gostiny Dvor, Farmer House and the House of Soviets, Victory Memorial and the Alley of Glory with description of the squares, mansions and their owners.

Museum Night at the Alexander Suvorov Estate-Museum in Konchanskoye

The event kicks off at 7 pm on 15 May at the Church of Alexander Nevsky with the Mysteries of Suvorov Park. The participants have a limited time to find all the hiding spots in the spring park where the legendary commander Alexander Suvorov used to walk for hours. That will be followed by an evening of discoveries, The Sciences in Alexander Suvorov’s Life. In a small yet exquisite house furbished in the 18th century style, guests will learn how ancient wisdom acquired through study helped Alexander Suvorov to win on the battlefield, inspire soldiers and excel at court. The Destiny of the Russian Village through the Works of Poet and Composer Viktor Kondratyev programme will close out the day. The programme will commemorate the fellow countryman who sang praise to Konchanskoye and its residents in his works.
