The 229th Rifle Division was dispatched to the Volkhov Front in mid-February 1943 to reinforce the 52nd Army, which was defending the frontline from Novgorod to Lyubtsy. In March and April 1943, the division took part in offensive operations near Novgorod. In May 1943, it was transferred from the army and placed under the command of the Volkhov Front.
The monument was unveiled in 1979 in the Khutyn Monastery. A large reinforced concrete rifle stands on a hill, with slabs with the figure “229” on the front side of the stele. On the left is a plaque commemorating Hero of the Soviet Union Alexander Nazarov.
