This is the most «non-novgorodian» temple of the city. Archi- tects from Moscow brought this complex architectural solution of the 17th century to Novgorod. Together with fine frescoes, it attracts attention to its elegance and festivity. Secular motifs of paintings can be seen as a kind of artistic commentary to the era of Peter the Great, whose domestic policies have been ambiguously evaluated. The Cathedral serves as a reminder of the ancient Church of our Lady, built to store the main shrine of Novgorod — the icon of «a sign of the Blessed Virgin Mary» that saved the city from Suzdal’s’ pillage. Today the icon is exhibited in St. Sophia Cathedral. Excellent acoustics of the Memorial is perfect for religious concerts.
