The temple was built in three months in 1179 in place of a stone church belonging to one of the largest and wealthiest monaster- ies in Novgorod. Late 12th century paintings let you feel the unique spiritual aspirations of the Novgorod society of that time. Relics of the Archbishop of Novgorod, Theoctistus, were buried here. The Archbishop lived there for many years keeping the oath of silence. In the late 18th century, his relics were moved to the St. George’s monastery. Today visitors of the Annunciation Church can see the Saint’s tomb disclosed after restoration.
