Bell Tower of St. Sophia Cathedral

The present Bell Tower was built in 1439 on the initiative of Archbishop Euthymius in place of the old one. It has survived a lot of tragedies, fell silent and came to life again, spreading bell-ring over the river and the town. Today, this is more than just one of the architectural symbols of the Kremlin. Every day on weekdays and holidays, the bells set the rhythm of the town, recalling its historical greatness.

The viewing point of the Tower provides a picturesque panorama of the city. On your way there you can visit an exhibition «Ancient Bells of Veliky Novgorod». The most massive bell exhibited weighs over 20 poods (about 320 kg), and the smallest one is over 1.5 poods (about 24 kg). In spring and summer, the Bell Tower holds concerts of bell ringing masters from different cities of Russia.
