Cathedral of the Nativity of our Lady in St. Anthony’s Monastery

This is one of the oldest temples in Russia, built in the early 12th century by the Reverend Anthony of Rome. According to a legend, using a single stone, the Saint sailed to the coast of the Volkhov River, where he founded a monastery cloister. Today, this stone can be seen in the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin. There are several preserved fragments of the ancient murals on the temple’s walls, unique in its content.

They are not canonically made, being created according to the programme prepared by the Reverend Anthony himself. A significant part of the walls is covered by bright, solemn 19th-century painting made in an academic manner.
