A Slavic settlement that stood in the place of the current Lyubytino in the 9th-10th centuries was the centre of a large territory, described in old manuscripts as the country seat of the local Slavic princes and their troops. Subordinate territories rendered annual tribute to the settlement, which rivalled Veliky Novgorod.
The construction of a living history museum began on the Msta River in May 2006 as part of the Inherent Rus project. To date, it comprises four houses, a barn, a larder, thrashing area, a smithery and a bakery – all faithful replicas of what was common in the 10th century.
