In her youth, while in St. Petersburg, she met revolutionary-minded students, attended their gatherings, and read forbidden literature. Elizabeth was imbued with the ideas of service for the benefit of the people. In 1868 she went abroad. She was one of the founders of the Russian section of the First International. Correspondent of K. Marx and the General Council of the First International. The initiator of the creation of the Women's Union in the days of the Paris Commune (1871). At the head of the women's battalion of the Communards, she participated in barricade battles. After the fall of the Paris Commune, she returned to Russia. No more revolutionary activity. Since 1905 she settled in Moscow, where she died.
